Babies + Mothers + Fathers + Families + Friends

We recently spend 5 days on Sanibel Island, an annual Thanksgiving tradition with the Richmond-side of the family.

It was sunny and peaceful, and Dan and I joked that it’s the most relaxed we may be for the next 10 years.

The weather was perfect – 80’s during the day, 60’s at night.

As you can see, Dan is already warming up to do kid things again, with his rabid intake of cookie monster ice cream.

We found a young photographer who captured some good shots on Lighthouse Beach, which we’ll frame and put in baby’s room.

My brother Jeff and his wife Claudia are also expecting a baby!  Claudia’s due date is May 17th.

It was really fun to take photos for their social media announcement on Bowman’s Beach one sunset evening.

I am so excited that the cousins will be close in age and distance.

In anticipation of our baby’s arrival in approximately 8 weeks (January 25th is her ETA!), I’ve been reading a book that Caroline gave me – Mothering the New Mother, by Sally Placksin.

I’ve modified a letter from a template in her book, and I’ll conclude this post with it.

Dear Family and Friends,

Thank you for the offer to help after baby is born.  As you know, it can be overwhelming or difficult for new moms to anticipate all of their needs, and kind and generous friends who want to help may not know exactly what to do.

We are preparing to honor our early weeks at home with baby by setting up a mother-the new-mother circle to help in a variety of ways.  If you’d like to be part of it, you can give us an idea of when and how you’d feel most comfortable lending a hand.

  • Can you bring a soup, salad, casserole, or other dish?
  • Can you pick up some items from the grocery store?
  • Can you come over for an hour or two to hold the baby while mom naps?
  • Do you have any expertise you can share? (massage, expertise in baby baby basics, soothing yoga or meditation)
  • Can you take Harriet for a walk?
  • Can you take mom out for a cup of tea and chat about how she’s finding the new mother experience?
  • Can you pick one helpful task from the “task basket” that mom has prepared in advance to do around the house?

If you’d like to offer to help, call Dan at 845.235.3718 and he will let you know what is most needed and what times are best.

Also, if you would like to bring a small gift, we would welcome the following (as baby already has an abundance of items):

  • Herbal teas (for mom)
  • Good, strong coffee beans (for dad)
  • A toy for Harriet

When you come over, some of mom’s needs may be:

  • The need for someone to talk to
  • The need to feel mothered
  • The need to talk about labor and delivery
  • The need to feel nurtured
  • The need for private time
  • The need for encouragement
  • The reminder to pay attention to my own emotional psychological and emotional states

Thank you so much for being a special part of our mothering-the-new-mother circle.

It takes a village to raise a child.

Love,

Sarah and Dan
